Jack Boul Exhibition Opening in New York in September
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jack Boul’s intimate oil paintings and monotypes have hung in the private homes of many collectors, including the former director of London’s National Gallery and connoisseur Olga Hirshorn, as well as the Phillips Collection, the Smithsonian, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Now, for the first time, Boul’s work will be shown in his native New York at the historic Salmagundi Club.
The Boul show of some 50 paintings and prints will be curated by the National Gallery’s Senior Lecturer Emeritus, Dr. Eric Denker, who has written extensively on Boul’s career.
“Boul’s brilliant small paintings and monotypes distill everyday life into compositions of transcendent calm and order,” said Dr. Denker “Anonymous figures sit in overstuffed chairs, or on benches, or in cafes—thinking, reading, speaking quietly among themselves. Cows tranquilly graze in pastures or patiently stand in barns. These subjects, plus landscapes and urban scenes, are reduced to their essentials in economical jewels of painting.”
Boul, now 97, was born in Brooklyn and raised in the south Bronx before moving to Washington, DC where he taught painting at American University for many years. He has previously exhibited his work at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, and the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust.
The Salmagundi Show will run from September 14-22 at the club which is located at 47 Fifth Avenue in New York. An opening reception will be held at noon on September 14th and Dr. Denker will lead a Gallery Talk on September 18 at 5pm.
